Pointe Schools prepares for State budget cuts

The news is full of stories about the State’s budget difficulties. Last year, Charter School payments were cut mid year by $4 million. The
State legislature has changed the Charter School payment schedule and schools were informed there will be no payment this July. As
the State legislature resumed this year, there are even more proposals for cuts to education. The State will almost certainly cut funding
for full-day kindergarten and the Governor has proposed another $10 million cut to Charter Schools. Many of Pointe Schools' parents
have asked how these cuts are affecting North Pointe, Canyon Pointe and Pinnacle Pointe.

Pointe Schools has been working diligently to set aside money in preparation for the missing July 20 payment and the other anticipated
cuts. Through the efforts of the Principals and staff, Superintendent Johnson has been able to accumulate the equivalent of one month’s
State payment in addition to money to cover Pointe Schools' portion of the possible statewide Charter School $10 million cut. This money
has been placed in a savings account, separate from Pointe Schools' operating expenses.

The administration at Pointe Schools also continues to be committed to full-day kindergarten. In the past, when the state only funded half-
day kindergarten, Pointe Schools charged tuition for enrichment the second half of the day. However, Pointe Schools' administration
recognizes many families are unable to pay tuition to cover the state’s missing portion due to the current economy. After careful
consideration and planning, Pointe Schools renewed its commitment to providing free full day kindergarten, even if the state stops
funding it. “We rearranged some things so we can continue to provide the academic, full-day kindergarten program for which we are
known,” said Superintendent Johnson. “Fortunately, we have a large enough program that we can absorb the costs in the upcoming
school year. We agreed that it would be shortsighted to deprive our youngest students of the benefits of our full-day kindergarten
program."
