What a Recent Harvard Study Shows About Student Performance in Charter Schools

The staff at Pointe Schools has known charter schools are better than district options for a while. Until recently, though, we only had anecdotal evidence to support our claims. Thanks to a new study performed by Harvard University’s Program on Education Policy and Governance (PEPG), we now have data to prove that charter schools outperform public schools.

Students advance at a faster pace

Part of what makes this study special is that it’s the first one to use national data to assess student performance. The data concluded that, overall, students advance at a faster pace when they’re enrolled in a charter school. Eighth-graders at charter schools showed learning gains that were three months ahead of district students from 2005 to 2017.

Charter schools benefit Black students and those from low-income households

Black students in this nationwide study were six months ahead of their peers in district schools. Additionally, scores of students in the bottom 25 percent of the socioeconomic spectrum increased twice as much as students in district schools between 2005 and 2017.

Charter schools are improving

Another fantastic data point the study found is that charter schools are getting better year over year. District schools outperformed charter schools in fourth and eighth grade in 2005; however, those gaps were closed in 2017. As more parents start enrolling their students in charter schools, we expect charter schools to vastly outperform district schools in the coming years.

Slow growth of charter schools is due to politics

Even though the data shows charter schools are improving the lives of children and that the schools are getting better each year, they’re not growing as fast as you’d expect. The study found that this slow growth doesn’t have anything to do with charter school benefits in Phoenix, AZ, but instead political resistance to charter schools.
